Why Elkhart? Let Me Show You!
Most of us go to a regular list of things people say when trying to get someone to invest in, move into, or get excited about a place.
We talk about the great hard working people in Elkhart. And there are thousands of great hardworking people in Elkhart. But that can be said about a lot of communities in our region, state, and country. That being said, not many can touch us in that category. Of course, we may be slightly biased but we’ll let our economic growth speak for itself. Oh yeah, and we do it with a level of diversity that is the backbone of our communities.
Now we have to be honest and admit that we have some issues we need to handle. The difference here is that when those challenges arise, we don’t cower in our individual silos…we come together, collaborate and overcome. In our community, WE over me, is the prevailing attitude.
Let’s talk about our great business community. And we have hundreds of great businesses in manufacturing, technology, agriculture, financial institutions, health care, human services, and much more. Our companies range from small startups to large companies employing thousands of people. This area is home to people who have an idea, develop that idea, and then get started. This is a place where you can make it, both figuratively and literally.
If population concentration is important to them, including Elkhart County and the seven counties that border us, there is a just a shade under 800,000 people living here.
Let’s mention the nine K-12 school corporations that are being inventive in how they deliver, not only education for students, but how they are preparing them for life after high school. All nine districts had graduation rates that exceeded the state average. Very few counties of comparable size and number of schools can match that.
There are numerous post-secondary educational opportunities that exist within a one hour car ride from the center of downtown. Better yet, you don’t even have to leave the county to attend or attract students from Goshen College, Ivy Tech, or Indiana University South Bend Elkhart Center. There are well over 20 institutions of higher learning in that one hour radius.
By the way if you want to get there from here (wherever that may be), we have the transportation infrastructure to get you there. Planes, trains and automobiles are all accessible for moving people and goods to and from Elkhart, and the expanding information highway is allowing us to move ideas faster and more efficiently than ever before.
Of course Elkhart and Elkhart County aren’t all about work. When it’s time to play, we know how to do that, too. Our rivers and parks provide plenty of outdoor recreation opportunities. By the way, a kayak or bike can get you to one of our seven communities. You like art and music? Head to any of our communities and you can find both in almost any style that suits your taste. If theater is more your speed head on over to the Bristol Opera House or the Lerner Theatre. If night life is what you are searching for, look no further than downtown Elkhart and Goshen.
There isn’t enough space to talk about all of the food choices. Let’s just say that if there is a style of food in the world, you will most likely be able to find it in Elkhart County.
Just in case the point still hasn’t been made, people asking the question should be told that the cost of living in Elkhart and Elkhart County is amongst the most affordable anywhere in the country. Currently, the investment in building all types and levels of housing is taking off.
Next time you get the question “Why Elkhart?” give the person asking the question a slight grin, invite them to sit down and relax, and show them “Why Elkhart.”
