Economic Development

The Economic Development Council meets each month to make the world aware of what we have to offer. The Council also works to make sure bureaucracy and paperwork do not get in the way of the entrepreneurial spirit that makes Elkhart County a great place to do business.

The Greater Elkhart community is asking: What can we brag about? What do we need to fix?
That is what our Council works to answer each month.

To activate and coordinate government and other resources to be responsive to economic development needs.

Promotion - Identify and promote the positives businesses find attractive, including tax structure and amenities for management and workers

Growth - Identify the negatives discouraging business growth and relocation. Work with government to improve the business environment

Cooperation - Assist other economic development organizations

Streamline permitting – The council conducted a study that eventually led to the creation of Elkhart’s one-stop permit center.

The council continues to monitor permits at both the city and county level, as well as the technical
review process for development.

Favorite Five – Wanting to promote the positive aspects of this community, the Council asked residents to list their five favorite aspects of the Elkhart area. The Favorite Five:

1. Business climate/entrepreneurship
2. Great people
3. Affordable cost of living
4. Rivers/lakes
5. Proximity to larger cities

The Council continues to find ways to promote the Favorite Five and other positive aspects of the community.
