SUMMARY:Images of Aging in Elizabeth Strout’s Novel “Olive Kitteridge”
DESCRIPTION:Rarely\, it seems to me\, does our culture offer stories on aging that respect the joys\, the assaults\, the tedium that life can throw our way–and the wonderful and terrible ways we can respond to it all.  Too often the elderly are reduced to a trope–the befuddled elder\, the eternally patient and smiling grandparent\, the small\, fragile aunt. Strout’s book gives us Olive\, a flawed yet compelling woman who takes us into layers of aging with a strident determination that\, though doomed to achieve less than she hopes\, allows us to come out of the book\, out of her world\, with a renewed appreciation for being human. Strout ends the novel with the words\, “It baffled her–the world.  She did not want to leave it yet.”  Most of us\, I think\, would agree.  (Course led by Donald Lanctot\, retired English teacher and befuddled elder). \nOct. 11\, 13\, 18. 20. DESCRIPTION:Growing up in Elkhart County in the 1950’s and 60’s\, Ken Pletcher experienced Hoosier Hysteria at its best. Shooting endless baskets on his garage hoop and parking in front of his family’s radio every Friday night to listen to games\, Ken came to love the game of basketball. He went on to play and coach basketball for many years. In this course\, the history and impact of Indiana basketball will be shared and discussed. The first two sessions will focus on the passion that is Hoosier Hysteria from its early days of Milan and South Bend Central through the time of packed gyms and tremendous local rivalries. The event will take place Wednesday\, October 26th from 5:30 pm – 6:30 pm at ETHOS Innovation Center 1025 North Michigan Street in Elkhart. enFocus recently added 15 young professionals to their Fellowship program and 3 staff to support the growing demand for young professional talent and innovation services in our region. \nThrough our Fellowship program\, young professionals work as problem-solvers on business and technology projects with partners across sectors. enFocus’ goal is to not only help local organizations spark innovation but to create meaningful engagements that will inspire young professionals to stay in our region after their Fellowship.\n​​\nThe Meet Our Fellows event will provide an opportunity to greet new Fellows and staff and the entire enFocus team.
