Why are some people of Christian faith leery of\, if not hostile toward\, science and scientists? In the first session we will address the characteristics of science\, the Bible as a source of science\, and the types of evidence we bring to science/faith discussions. In session two we will explore barriers to communication and the role of bias and misinformation. In session three we will address philosophical and scientific issues that appear to cause threat to Christians. In the final session we will consider some contemporary sources of science/faith tension\, e.g. climate\, vaccines\, teaching of evolution. This year’s theme is “Fast or Slow\, Chemistry Makes It Go.” They will be hosting the family-friendly STEM FEST at the 2130 Omega Event Center on Middlebury Street IN ELKHART on Friday\, October 22\, from 5 – 8:30 PM\, and Saturday\, October 23\, from 10 AM – 4 PM.\n25 organizations will provide hands-on activities to celebrate science\, technology\, engineering\, and math. Silly Safaris will present their exciting Animal Show with a wide variety of animals. Other activities include robots\, a scavenger hunt\, and math origami.

We have seldom heard about a huge body of texts known as “apocryphal” or extracanonical because they were condemned as untrue\, fake\, or contrary to the Faith. In this class we will examine some of these “forbidden texts” for the insights they offer into early Christianity and for their afterlives in art and literature. Judith Davis is Professor Emerita of French and Humanities. Retired after 24 years at Goshen College\, she has taught Lifelong Learning classes on the Virgin Mary and dystopian literature\, among others.
