SUMMARY:12th Annual Bears in the Air Kick-Off Party
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we celebrate our twelfth year of giving back to children and Veterans in our community at our 12th Annual Bears in the Air Kick-Off Party! The location of this year’s party is representative of our heritage and takes us back to our roots: our main terminal. It will be held on Friday\, December 1 from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. \nGather your family\, friends\, and colleagues for an evening of joy and celebration at SBN as we raise funds to purchase brand new teddy bears to provide to children in area hospitals. These bears bring comfort and smiles to the children during a difficult time in their lives. The Bears in the Air program also supports our community’s most vulnerable Veterans who have served our wonderful country and are now in need of our support. Along with the bears\, the funds raised also provide financial assistance to the Robert L. Miller\, Sr. Veteran’s Center. The more donations collected\, the more smiles we can create for both children and veterans alike. \nAdmission to the party is $35 per person at the door. The cost will provide a bear to a child in area hospitals\, including Beacon Children’s Hospital\, Corewell Health Lakeland Hospital\, Elkhart General Hospital\, Saint Joseph Health System\, and A Rosie Place for Children\, and a portion of the funds will also go to the Veterans. Tables of 10 seats may be reserved in advance for $450. Tables are based on availability and must be reserved by November 17. To reserve your table\, call Julie Curtis at (574) 800-3230. \nIn addition to enjoying an evening at the airport for a great cause\, you can look forward to light refreshments\, cocktails\, music\, and some of the most fabulous door prizes. \nThe event is open to the public for adults 21+. If you cannot make the kick-off party but would still like to contribute\, donations can be made until December 15 at https://givegrove.com/bearsintheair2023/. \nCome have a delightful time at SBN while making a positive difference in the lives of children and honoring our courageous Veterans! \nPlease park in the long-term parking lot. DESCRIPTION:VITA: AN EXTRAORDINARY VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY \nThe VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) Program administered by Goodwill of St. Joseph County is looking for volunteers. VITA is a government-sponsored program which assists low-income taxpayers by preparing and filing their federal and state taxes free of charge. Last year\, from the end of January through April 15th\, the program helped more than 1800 taxpayers in St. Joseph and Elkhart counties\, saving them thousands of dollars in preparation fees. VITA volunteers come from many different backgrounds\, from college professors to librarians\, from retired ministers to health professionals. NO PRIOR TAX PREPARATION EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED. All of the expertise necessary to pass the IRS VITA certification tests in order to become a VITA tax preparer is provided through a series of Zoom and/or in-person training sessions which take place during the fall. Preparers typically work in groups of four or more\, which means that veteran volunteers are available to answer questions and help solve problems\, if necessary. Other ways to participate in the program\, such as acting as a greeter or screener\, don’t require doing tax preparation. Being part of the VITA program is a great way to contribute to the community while working with a group of compatible and helpful fellow volunteers.
