DESCRIPTION:We are excited to host South Bend International Airport’s 11th Annual Bears in the Air Kick-Off Party from 6-9pm on December 2! The party will take place in an even larger hangar this year – the SkyWest hangar located east of the terminal building. \nWe invite you to gather family\, friends\, and colleagues\, and join us for an evening of celebration while we raise funds to provide newly purchased teddy bears to children in area hospitals. These bears provide smiles and comfort when there is little reason to smile. The Bears in the Air program also supports our community’s most vulnerable Veterans who have served our great country and are now in need of our support. Funds raised also provide financial assistance to the Robert L. Miller\, Sr. Veteran’s Center. The more donations collected\, the more smiles we can create for both children and veterans alike. \nAdmission to the party is $30 per person at the door which will provide a bear to a child in area hospitals\, including Beacon Children’s Hospital\, Elkhart General Hospital\, Saint Joseph Health System\, Spectrum Health Lakeland\, and A Rosie Place for Children. A portion of the funds will also go to Veterans. Tables of 10 seats may be reserved in advance for $350. Tables are based on availability and must be reserved by November 18. To reserve your table\, call Julie Curtis at (574) 800-3230. \nThe event is open to the public for adults 21+. Attendees will enjoy light refreshments\, cocktails\, music\, and fabulous door prizes. For anyone who cannot make the kickoff party\, donations can be made until December 16 at https://givegrove.com/bearsintheair2022/ \nWe promise a fun evening leaving you with a joy in your heart knowing you have helped a child and honored our veterans. \nPlease park in long-term parking and follow the signs to the hangar. DESCRIPTION:Along with the creative light display\, guests will experience the warming fire pits\, holiday music\, concession\ntent\, any-day admission ticketing and\, of course\, the Giving Trees! The Giving Trees are cut\, evergreen trees\, displayed on anchored stands\, arranged along the Promenade through the holiday lights. ADEC’s Special Day is December 16th where a portion of all ticket sales will be donated to our organization. The trees are decorated by our selected community partners. This year there are 17 Giving Trees\, each representing a day of our scheduled Winter Wonderland Holiday Lights: November 25-26-27 and December 2-3-4; 9-10-11; 16-23 \n● Each organization’s evening date are selected/assigned at random\n● Partners will receive a percentage of that evening’s total ticket revenue (including both presales and gate sales).

DESCRIPTION:Join us for this free lecture! \nNow that the telephone is essentially extinct\, it’s time to look back at its story and reflect on how our lives were entwined with this communication wonder! Glenn Gilbert grew up with the “party line\,” later went on to work for the telephone industry for several years\, and spent over thirty years installing and maintaining the telephone system for Goshen College. Join him in a lighthearted\, sometimes technical\, sometimes humorous\, nostalgic look at this 20th-century marvel. Come prepared to share your own telephone stories as well. \nGlenn Gilbert recently retired from a 35-year career at Goshen College. In addition to being Utilities Manager\, Sustainability Coordinator and Director of Facilities\, he also installed and maintained two telephone systems for the campus. Glenn prefers riding his bicycle to any other form of transportation and has actively encouraged residential and commercial solar electric installations in the community. He also is a member of the Goshen Mayor’s Environmental Advisory Committee.

SUMMARY:Midwinter Lecture: A Loving Cup\, Tuberculosis\, and the Family I Never Knew
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this FREE lecture! \nI thought I knew all of dad’s Swedish uncles and aunts\, those who had immigrated to the US in 1872. But a discovery while rummaging around the attic of the family farmhouse told a different story. I ultimately learned of an additional Swedish aunt\, the oldest and one I had never heard of. That attic discovery began a hunt for details to explain who this aunt was and how she and her family had slipped into oblivion\, becoming the “family I never knew!” This is her story. \nJim Smith grew up 165 miles north of here on a small farm in western Michigan. After college\, marriage to Sherry\, helping to construct Central Manor\, graduate school and three years with the US Air Force\, Jim and family returned to this area to a position with the Ames Division of Miles Laboratories. Ten years later\, he accepted a position with Zimmer\, Inc. in Warsaw\, retiring from Zimmer in 2004. \nIn his retirement\, Jim served on the board of the Friends of the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail\, the Goshen City Plan Commission and the steering committee of New Perspectives on Faith\, a ministry of College Mennonite Church. He has also presented at earlier seasons of the Midwinter Lecture Series. \nJim remains an avid reader and enjoys researching and writing family history. After residing in Goshen for 25 years\, Jim and Sherry moved to Fort Wayne in 2021 where they recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary. They have two daughters and five grandchildren.
